Krista Sanford

My name is Krista Sanford. I'm originally from a suburb of Chicago but now live in Indianapolis. I love practicing yoga and reading!

Question 1: What inspired you to start writing?

I always liked reading as a kid. After losing myself in so many stories, I decided I wanted to create my own stories as well.

Question 2: How have your past experiences influenced you as a writer?

My past experiences most definitely influences my writing. I find it easy to write what I know.

Question 3: What have you written that you're the most proud of?

A poem called "Sister Slumber Parties". It's a fictional poem and it was published in Horned Things.

Question 4: What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

Writer's block is just a temporary period where the ideas are a lot harder to find. I may still write--or maybe even take a break from writing--but it's not as easy or free flowing as normal. I never try to force the words out, though. I give in to the writer's block because I trust that the ideas will come again.

Question 5: What is your writing process like? Are you more of a plotter or a pantser?

I used to be a huge planner with my writing. I would need to make sure everything was perfect and when it wasn't, writing became stressful instead of fun. Now I try not to think too much before diving into something. I want the ideas to have room to breathe.

Question 6: Do you play music while you write — and, if so, what’s your favorite?

I tend to just put my liked songs on shuffle and listen to a mixture of genres. Some of my top favorites are Quinn XCII, The Maine, and Mod Sun

Question 7: What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

Don't compare your rough draft to sometimes final copy

Question 8: What do you think is the best way to improve writing skills?

The best way to improve your writing skills is by reading! You can learn about what works and what doesn't and then blend it into your own writing. I've learned so much about my own writing just because I picked up a book.

Question 9: Are there any books or authors that inspired you to become a writer?

Sarah Dessen. She shaped my reading as a young adult!

Question 10: How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I've written one chapbook titled "Fatboy: A Collection". I have also had almost 20 poems published in various magazines.
